Installed Ubuntu 10.10, can't connect to internet

I just installed ubuntu 10.10 and I'm unable to connect to the internet. I checked for device recognition and the output is DISABLED which apparently means that my network device may be turned off. How can I turn it on. Windows is no longer installed. By the way I'm an ubuntu newbie. Hence, I wiped my hard drive during installation. :mad:
