Infected with some kind of malware Please help!!!

1180 Views 15 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Ried
I'm usually pretty good with small issues like this, but after spending hours searching for help on this issue I can't even find any information on what is happening.... My roommate was using my computer the other day and after browsing different sites (he says he didn't download anything), he told me he turned the computer off. When I got home and turned it on, I noticed that cmd.exe pops up at during startup but does not display anything it just quickly appears then disappears. Then, every 10 seconds or so, what looks like a system message (displaying "Windows Internet Explorer" in the title bar) repeatedly pops up saying "Cannot find 'http:///'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.". The only way of preventing this message from annoyingly popping up is to not close it. I can't seem to find any services running that aren't supposed to be there and there is nothing listed under startup in msconfig that shouldn't be. I've ran several anti-spyware scans using the several programs I have access to as well as the virus scans I ran using Norton, never finding anything in those scans. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am severely losing patience and cannot seem to find any resolutions for this matter....

Ran a scan with HijackThis and here is the log:

Hello bigred1030 and welcome to TSF,

Upload this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\hpprintspool.exe to http://virusscan.jotti.org and report back what it found.

At the top of the window you should see "File to Upload & scan" and a blank box. Copy and paste the red text from above into the box. Then click "Submit".

When it is finished, please copy and paste the information listed under "Service" and "Scanner Results" here.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to search for anything that may be lurking about. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on
located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on
    then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

Hi,

What happened to this entry that was in your previous HijackThis scan--did you disable it--are you still getting the "Cannot find 'http:///'. ?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KIT3] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\hpprintspool.exe
No I didn't disable anything... I just ran the scans that you asked me to. After running the last round of scans, I did notice that the cmd.exe window that kept popping up at startup no longer appeared. Also, the 'Cannot find http:///' message hasn't returned either. Should I run HJT once more and post the log?
Please do. :sayyes:

I'd also like for you to look and see if that file is on your system:

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Using 'My Computer', navigate the following path and see if that file is there:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\hpprintspool.exe
See less See more
Ok, I looked in the spool folder and didn't see hpprintspool.exe... There is a batch file named cmd.exe in that folder as well as a file named fdata.wup. Could the batch file be the same cmd.exe that kept popping up then disappearing at startup?

Anyways, here is the latest HijackThis log:

Hi,

I was able to determine that hpprintspool.exe most certainly was not legit--regardless of the the jotti results reported. It seemed to have disappeared after Panda disinfected this file:

C:\My Music\DvdXsoft.PSP.Video.Converter.v1.00.WinAll.Regged-EiTheL.zip[DvdXsoft.PSP.Video.Converter.v1.00.WinAll.Regged-EiTheL.zip][install.exe]

The other files you listed in the spool folder appear legit--possibly belonging to an Ipswitch utility. I'd like to use a different online scanner this time around, as well as another tool--just for thoroughness sake.

Before I have you perform another online scan, your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. I didn't have you do this earlier due to the possible Haxdoor infection on your system as well as the symptoms you were experiencing. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
----------------------------------------------------------

Next, please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        [*]Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
----------------------------------------------------------

Please download SREng.

**You may receive a message "The bandwidth limit for this site has been exceeded", please keep trying--eventually you'll get through.

1. Extract it to Desktop & double click SREng.exe to run it

2. Select 'Smart Scan' & tick "Verify Digital Signatures"

3. Click on the [Scan] button

4. When finished, click on the [Save Reports] button & save the log to Desktop

5. Attach the log in your next reply. Dont post it.

You may have to rename SREngLOG.log to SREngLOG.txt to upload it.

I removed the previous version of Java (there was only 1 in add/remove) and installed JRE 6, then ran the scans you asked me to.

Here is the report from the Kaspersky scan:

I also attached the report from the sreng scan like you asked...
I changed the extension of the log to a .txt file like you said, but I'm not sure if the attachment worked. If it's not there, let me know and I'll try again.

Hiya...no, the attachment is not there.

Click the Manage Attacments button then 'browse' to the location of the SREng.txt.

Click 'Upload'.
Ok let's try this again... I think it worked this time.
