That's what I've ended up doing.
What I've discovered however is that on wake up the 'Fn' key on my Acer laptop seems to be activated (even though I only press and release it to wake up). One of the letters in my password is 'i' and when I press this letter to enter it in the password dialog box nothing appears. This is consistent with the 'Fn' key being pressed. When I wake my computer up from sleep without pressing 'Fn' and 'F4' the password problem disappears!
It's very strange, but that's for your suggestion.
