I am about to take my Tyan and PIII 750 and replace it with Intel D850EMV2 and a P4 1.9 GHZ (all plus 512 MB of memory for under $400 -couldnt resist). Running a Dual boot -primary is windows ME (mistake edition) 80 gig -run this one so my secondary- 30 GB XP is hidden (NTFS) and to store pic's and music on...Have a plextor burner --that decided it dont want to burn anymore...(next project) and a 12 CD rom. Web cam, epson stylus 900 printer,

Before I leap...any advice....and FYI on a few of the other threads there was questions about whether you need to format to do this... I am going to TRY not to format so well see how dropping an old drive into a new machine turns out...

Scared about HOW XP activation is going to like all the changes so I guess thats another test...It wanted to reboot after it detected a new HD....and that was one Item...!!!

Oh and as usual.... TIA (see the quizzes):D

Ok so after wating for the memory ...backorderd..I put it all together...rebootted and...Boot failure system halted...replace the power supply....(P4 needs a power supplywith atlest 12 A....wattage doesnt matter .. http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/atx12v2.htm ) ..still getting errors...the bios had to be tweaked....checked every setting...after restarting and cursing alot :upset: it turned out the auto detection of my Hard drive was right but it thought it was a CD rom...so after I straightened that out... (dont ask me why) it booted up....MY master the ME booted right up and (this will be the ONLY TIME IS SAY THIS) ME worked like a charm....found everything.....set it all up and was ready to go...boot time decresed and it flys...I actully might like ME...it just needs a P4 to run right....OK if ME went nice XP on the slave driveshould be a dream...WRONG Blue screen stop error...:upset:

Reboot ...stop error....
Reboot...reinstall...(R) for repair of the installation (no I did not format either drive) and XP is running like a rocket....heres the KICKER...it reactivated WITHOUT a problem...( I replaced the motherboard, NIC, processer, memory )I guess thier is truth to the 120 day wait....I had the phone in hand ready to call but no need...

Lessons:

Check you power supply when upgrading to a P4....

Check the BIOS with a fine comb...one miss setup and aghhhh

Load your cabs on the system before the upgrade and watch the OS repair itself after

THERE IS NO NEED TO reformat...although if you have the time and nothing to lose...it will clean things up

Wait atlest 120 days before you reuse a Windows XP cd

Good luck!!

Pop off the sides and get a directional fan blowing on the sucker... and A/C would work too, but the fan would probably be easier. Then once you get it stable we can talk cooling

It seems to run fine...Right now...gets alittle quirky and my set up doesnt (along with the wife) allow for putting a fan there....so I was going to hit ChumpUSA or Microcenter for another case fan...but you guys have ALOT more knowledge then me so Ill am willing to learn;)

When you dropped in the processor what did you use for a thermal conductive? (for example Arctic Silver)
Is it just the CPU overheating, or is the overall temp of the case running red?
How many fans are you currently using?
Where are they located?
What sort of cards are you running?

The processer came preapplied with thermal goop so I didnt apply extra...wanted too but forogt...

It is the overall temp of the system

3 fans if thats the right name for them....the P/S fan and the CPU fan and Video fan...are they cooling anything else but thier own stuff??

Cards...here we go...

Radeon 8500 64MB -has fan on it
Creativelabs Sound blaster live
Firewire card by adaptec
USB expansion card by SMC
Pinnicale Analog video card

I have an open slot on the case...could that be causing the heatup???

Mabey i get a PCI fan to put in the opeing....the M/B has connections for fan 2 -4

Nic additional USB are onboad

Okay.. if your going to do this... I guess a case fan up front if you have a spot where it can get air, and a fan in the back directly below the PS if possible, that way the fan that is blowing out the back is directly down wind of the CPU... That is the standard config in all of my cases.... You can go several ways with this... your P4 is definately worthy of the extra effort to get it running cool, but the question is whether you want to do it.... the 2 fan method I told you about will probably take care of it, because you had a lot of stagnant air build up, and with one fan going in and one going out the air doesn't get much of a chance to heat up the place....

Here are a couple links to try if you decide you want to take this further

www.coldcpu.com
www.heatsinkfactory.com
www.dumpcomputers.com

Can you check the temp of this puppy in the bios?

I have a 2Gig P4 and it runs around 43c at idle.

I don't have air conditioning or anything but fans and it's been one hot mother today.

I'm going to reboot and check it now BRB.

Well the room temp is 85f and the CPU temp is 43c or 109 f

been on for about an hour...is this normal ..should I set my alerts higher...get a fan to be on the safe side???
