Hello I have a Asus RT-N66U router it has a usb port, I also have a 1tb portable harddrive. Could I plug this into my usb port on the router to share the content from my harddrive to my devices? my laptop and android phone?
Also I do not have a smart tv, what would I need to buy for it to connect to the wifi to read from the portable drive? if this is doable?

I looked up your router and it does show a hard drive connected to the USB port as a file sharing device. Look at your documentation to see if there is anything special you have to do to get it to work.

Yes you can share the HDD over your network.

But as you don't have a Smart TV, you can't connect it directly to the network. I assume you are wanting to play media on the TV from the HDD, in which case you simply need a standalone media player such as a Roku or WDTV.

Amazon Fire TV Stick would also prove to be a cost effective alternative to the Roku. For video, as long as you are running an app that supports DLNA/UPnP, you should be able to access and play the files on the USB drive through your TV.
