I was donated a Gateway EV 910 monitor, a 19 inch model.

I used a standard HD 15, m/m, cable between the monitor and my CPU and the image on the monitor was VERY dark.

I adjusted brightness and contrast to their max settings and the image on the monitor did not change at all.

Do I not have the proper installation and/or hardware or is this just an old monitor? (i.e., going bad, which was the reason it was donated)

Hi,
It sounds like a bad monitor.
Have you tried changing the settings in Control panel > Display?
