It depends how closely they look. Likely to have damaged the TVS diode. This type of damage would indicate an over current condition. You learned a valuable lesson, never work on the machine under power....

Spin up spin down could be sevaral things. It's going to depend how closely they look at it. At the price of drives, it would seem to me they just replace them and worry about refurbing it when they get to it.
And we see LOTS of those kind of drives in the lab for recovery....

Nope, they are not responsible for your data. Afraid that is gone for good.
what kind of harddrive manufacture isn't responsible for data :S

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a failproof hard drive. We see them all come through the lab for recovery. Seagate had their 7200.11 firmware mess and their Momentus Apple drives, WD has a couple of notorious models. Actually the one we see less of for recovery is Samsung, but it's probably because in this part of the world they have a smaller market share. Bottom line is it's not a question of IF a drive will fail, but when.

At present SSD's are something of an unknown as far as long term reliability is concerned. They haven't been out long enough to know for sure what their long term reliability will be.

I have a Fujitsu 6 GB HD that is over 12 years old and still works well with SMART reporting no issues. Until 3 years ago it was in daily use. I don't know if that was a particularly good drive or I am just lucky. I also had a 40 GB Maxtor that failed without warning after a few years. Don't read too much into this.
