iexplore.exe virus

6123 Views 26 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  sjpritch25
Soo... I'm playing my game on my computer, no other programs up, and I hear ads playing randomly through my speakers. I look in task manager processes and see 2 iexplore.exe programs running usually taking up 60-90K memory. I end the process and I see it say "recovered this tab" and it starts a different ad. Let me mention again Internet Explorer is NOT open while this happens. Sometimes while on Internet Explorer, clicking on a link takes me to an ad and I can't go back, it just reloads the ad. I found where some of the problem is. Doing a full search of my computer for iexplore I found 30 programs named that. I looked at their properties and only one was in the right place of Program Files. The rest are in files similar to this:

C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-internetexplorer_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_2d2b3e0d1d136ff5

Now, windows won't let me delete these folders, it says I don't have the authority but this is the only User Account on this computer and is an administrator. I used Pocket Killbox to remove all of the wrong files and it worked....until I turned the computer on the next time. Can anyone help me with this problem? Until this problem is solved, I'm going to remove them again with Pocket Killbox and just keep my computer on standby when I'm not using it. I appreciate any help.

Oh, it's not always just two iexplore.exe running in my processes, I have seen up to around 7-10 running.
Welcome to TSF :)

  • Download OTL.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-Click on OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
CREATERESTOREPOINT
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Now....I did this while the files aren't bothering me. As I mentioned, I used Pocket Killbox to remove them and haven't turned my computer off. They come back after the computer's rebooted.
CAn you please post the files that you continue to remove? Also, please stop removing them because it will make my job much harder.

You have a file i would like you to get anaylzed. Please go to VirusTotal. On the very top of the Website, you will see a Browse button. Use that to search for this file C:\Windows\System32\pj98431.dll. Then Click on Send. This could take between 30 Second-a couple of minutes. When you get the Results, Open Notepad, please highlight the results, copy them to Notepad and save it as "Scan.txt". Save the text file "Scan.txt" to your desktop. Please include the file in your next post.
Here's a screen shot of my processes. The only program I was running was the screen shot taker. The iexplore.exe processes came back without restarting my computer this time.

I didn't memorize the files, but they seem to stay there whether I delete them or not. Shall I do the OTL scan again and post?
Here's the scan you asked for.

When I deleted the files I'd do a total computer scan, like shown, and I'd just delete the file that holds the applications that aren't located in Program Files. I'll also include a screen shot of what it looks like when I open one of the iexplore.exe file locations.

Everytime I go to use GMER to scan my computer, the computer shuts off and reboots asking if I want to start in Safe Mode or Star Windows Normally and tells me Windows was shut down unexpectedly. I've tried scanning it 3-4 times now. I know it's not because the computer's been on too long as it can go for hours and hours playing games.
Try running gmer in Safe MOde
The computer won't let me run safe mode. I swear, this machine hates me. I restarted the computer and pressed every option available and there was no safe mode. Online and the Help and Support on the computer both say to hit F8.....F8 is not an option and does nothing.
Did you try F10? What kind of computer?
HP Pavillion Laptop. And I did try F10. The only thing I can think of is unplugging the computer without the battery and rebooting, it'll give me the option to run in safe mode. Going to try that and get back with you.
Scan in Safe mode didn't seem to get the same results. It didn't seem to get any results. And the problem doesn't happen so long as I stay off of Internet Explorer after turning a computer on. So I'm on IE to get it to work and I'm going to try scanning with GMER one last time.
I actually think its something else.

Please boot back into Normal Mode.
