IE6 homepage hijacked, W2K

My homepage is redirected to "iehomepages.com", a spyware advertisement trying to push SpyHeal and Pest Trap. I went through the steps, as indicated, but Panda has apparently become aware of its use here? They found a dozen or so spywares and a couple "potent" virii, but won't process them without buying the service. Fair enough. Adaware and Spybot don't find anything, also have checked with AVG antispy. This may not be a serious as some folks problems, but its aggravating nonetheless.

Here is the log from HijackThis:

Multiple AV

It appears that you have some traces of Norton AntiVirus present in your system, although AVG seems to be the Anti Virus of your choice. Did you uninstalled Norton some times back? If you do not intend to use Norton then the traces left by it should be removed as that consumes system resources unnecessarily and can also come in conflict with your present Anti Virus creating critical system instability. If you need I shall help you out in removing Norton after your system is completely clean.

Downloads

1. Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Do not install if you are using the 64 bit version of windows. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_whichcpu.exe

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

2. I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix.

Run AVG Anti-Spyware
  • From the main screen, click on update, then click the Start
    update
    button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update
    successful")
  • select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware. DO NOT scan yet.

3. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

4. Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Click "Next", then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin: Please follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your compute: Please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load and this is normal.
Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Disable Security Softwares

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG Anti-Spyware. Please disable your AVG Anti-Spyware Guard, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive

Show Hidden Files and Folders

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

Fix

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist):

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)
