hi ... my internet explorer does not open ... when i click on the icon, the sandclock appears for some time n nothing happens .. i have tried everythg from double clicking to right click/open ... nothing works .. pls help ... the problem with my comp started few days back when i realised the nortan antivurs that i installed lately was not working ... when i tried to uninstal and reinstal again - it didnt get installed ... yesterday IE was giving some problem and today is not even opening .. plsssssss help as i am unable to do any internet related work ... m posting this from a friends PC :sigh: ...

Hi dipvi, welcome to TSF...

the first thing I would suggest is visiting Norton's support pages as you should be able to download some tools which will help remove any traces of their software. Norton software can be notorious for staying active in the registry after uninstalling and can result in serious conflictions with other programs as well as resulting in errors when attempting to reinstall other Norton products.

Also, have you tried running Internet Explorer directly from its directory in Program Files? Also, it may be an idea to download Firefox from your friends PC and then burn it to a disc or copy to a pen drive then install it on your machine and test whether you're able to access the internet using that.

Is your mail client also affected? If you haven't checked yet, try sending yourself a test email to see if you're able to download the data.

Finally, what type of internet connection do you have? Are you able to ascertain whether you can connect successfully or not?

With no browser open, no email program, all messenger clients shut down open a command prompt, (start, run cmd press enter)

Type ipconfig (press enter)
You havent stated connection whether its dialup, ISDN, DSL etc but try this command:

ping www.google.com

(If you get 4 packets sent and recieved you have internet connectivity)

Then type netstat -a

Make sure there are NO established connections. You will see a string of ports open and listening but no connection should be established. If all is well
I'd try another browser like firefox as has already been suggested.
