For some reason the desktop icons for IE and My Computer changed to the simple generic white box.
I tried to restart the computer, but that didn't help.
These are not shortcut icons, so I don't think I can delete them and put them back.
Any suggestions.

BTW the cons are fine in other locations like quick launch.

Try this:-

Right click on an empty section of your desktop

Select PROPERTIES... then the DESKTOP tab... followed by CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP

Check the relevant box and then click on RESTORE DEFAULT.

Thanks, that did it
I tried to change the icon back in that window early, but I hesitated to "restore default" because I worried about losing my customization. But that did the trick.
Thanks so much.
I just wondered why that happened in the first place. I mean windows never acts strangely:-}

Might need to rebuild the icon cache. Get Tweak UI.

After installed highlight "Repair" bottom left>then on right side from the drop
down Menu choose "Rebuild Icons" and click "Repair Now"/Apply/Ok
May need to restart.

Your welcome - glad I could help.

That was the easier remedy, which is always worth a try. If that doesn't work, then rebuilding the icon cache is the next step - so it's worth putting the links as posted by Flatiron2 in favourites. It happened to me once (about 5 years ago), there wasn't anything wrong with my copy of windows and it's never happened again.

My icons go bad constantly. I think RegSeeker is doing it.
I've used Regseeker for many years without ever once having had a problem.

But obviously any reg edit program can cause problems if not used carefully and in the right way.

So if your icon problems are related to Regseeker, then it's likely to be the way the tool is being applied, rather than the software itself.

I very much doubt its RegSeeker as it doesn't scan in the icon cache.

There is a regifix that restores your icon cache. If you have't given it enough capacity it will also tend to become corrupted and erratic behavior on the desktop is portrayed.

Heh, actually Peter it was you that got me using it. I LOVE that program, and use it all the time. Let it delete all the Entries it finds automatically, without even looking at them.

I threw that up there to see if maybe you (or others) had the same experience.

Always read the disclaimer before accepting any advice...lol

But seriously, are you saying that your icons go wrong immediately after using Regseeker? That's a new one on me.

No but it's the only think I can figure. I figure it's some auto-scan, auto-delete program... SOMETHING is doing that. I am most confident of that because I'll have my icons just fine and one day I'll just notice one is gone. It's never more than 3 or 4. Just figured RegSeeker was "zapping" entries that were required for the icons. I have no evidence.
