I am currently repairing an (old-school) laptop.
The original 2gig hdd has failed. I have replaced
it with a 4gig, however now the bios is giving me
an 00174 error.

I can not access the BIOS at boot up, the battery is fine,
it will hold a complete charge, and seeing that the system
is 8 years old,that was a surprise by itself.

I believe I have your laptop's brother--a 380XD, and I can often access the BIOS by hitting, I believe, F1 between the time it finishes counting the memory and when it displays "Thinkpad" in the lower right corner of the screen. ...but it showing the earror makes me think either the disk is too freakin' big for it to know what to do with it, or is busted. I have often switched between a 2GB disk and a couple 500MB disks, each with different OSes on them. It was just plug and push. :wink:

174 Configuration error:
1. Check device configuration.
2. Hard disk drive assembly.
3. System board.

Hold the F1 key down when turning a tp on to jump into bios.

Make sure the drive is properly installed, and the bios configuration is correct.

It's good for 4gb drive max.

Although the battery may show a 100% charge, the only way you can tell if it's still good is to actually use it on battery power and see how long it runs while in use.
