IBM ThinkPad battery error

i have an IBM thinkpad A20m [model 2628-4SU].

my battery worked fine for 5 years. then one day, the battery meters (ibm's battery maximiser gauge and window's gauge) started going from 100% down to 10% after a few minutes. but the battery would still work for another hour. then i fully charged my battery and it stopped working.

its been about 2 weeks since that happened. ive tried everything to get the batteyr to work again. i tried putting it in the fridge and lots of other stuff. currently, windows says the battery has 57% left in it. the ibm gauge is empty. the ibm battery information program says 'Battery - Error'.

ive looked everywhere in the ibm website but nothing helped. is there anyways i can fix this? is my battery broken or is my laptop messed up?

i would deeply appreciate any help at all.

thanks guys

Five years is quite a long time to have a battery around for. Generally, laptop batteries are only designed to last a year or two. More than likely the problem is battery failure.
