my a20m (that was given to me with this problem) wont start. If I press the power button, the power LED lights up then dies instantly, i hear a click sound when I press the power button. I tried removing the bat, using only the charger and it still wont start. I tried removing the hard disk, dvd-rw and the ram one by one and tested them on all possible combinations (with or without the hardwares) and still the same result. what seems to be the cause of this problem? :4-dontkno

Looks like a dead motherboard.

Try these first (I believe you have done this first part already):

  • Startup on battery only
  • Startup on AC only

If symptoms persist or if this has been done...

Try the steps below:

  1. Power OFF the computer
  2. Remove the battery
  3. Unplug AC
  4. Press and hold Power ON button for 30 secs. at least
  5. Put back the battery
  6. Plug back AC
  7. Power ON as normal

If the same thing happens...

  1. Take it apart/Disassemble the laptop
  2. Remove the rest (also remove modem and WLAN card if present), except RAM (use a good/working RAM module not the one installed), mobo, LCD and power ON switch
  3. Power ON using adapter

yup, and the same thing happened, I even removed the floppy drive in case the floppy drive was the culprit. Still the same thing, only one blink in the power LED then turn off instantly

If you have done the above steps, try replacing all the RAM modules with good/working ones. If symptoms persist then it could be the motherboard.

I joined these forums just to say thanks. I found your post on a search engine, and sure enough pulling the battery out with no a/c adapter, holding the power button down thing worked. I was able to fix a friend/babysitter's yard sale laptop because of this post. Thank you again.
