IBM R51 battery stuck in laptop (half way out)

I can't remove my laptop battery. I've done this many times already but don't know why I can't remove the battery. It appears to be stuck half way out & in a bit crooked. The laptop won't boot with the battery fully inserted & now only works with the battery disconnected & a/c adapter connected. How can I fully remove the battery without damage to the laptop?
