Hi Folks,
I have just recently performed a "return to factory defaults" software rebuild on my laptop. I am now getting a fault with the USB ports not performing at USB 2.0 speeds. When I connect USB 2.0 devices to the machine, they sometimes start up correctly, but often the OS informs me that the device could run at higher speeds.
Usually if the device starts up correctly using USB 2.0, at some point later during usage (from minutes to hours to not at all) I hear the noise related to plugging in / unplugging USB devices (twice or more), and then the OS reports that the device could run faster if it was connected to a USB 2.0 port.
After the factory reset I have :
-completed the various downloads from Microsoft to update the system to SP3
-used the Thinkvantage update software to do various installs (including BIOS and Controller updates)
-installed the correct drivers for my devices
-tried the USB devices on another computer - all function correctly at USB 2.0
-followed the IBM troubleshooting instructions for USB faults on this laptop
-run the relevant IBM hosted Intel chipset driver installer
-removed the USB entries from the device manager and allowed the system to reinstall the drivers
-checked for any BIOS settings which may affect USB performance
-run the IBM PC Doctor which does not report any faults with USB
During the rebuild, when I first added the drivers and my USB devices, I noticed the OS continually seamed to "forget about the devices", and after each start up would require me to re-associate the devices with their drivers.
I thought this was most likely a software issue related to the reset, but I am starting to suspect a hardware fault. Any suggestions as to how to determine if this is software or hardware related, or how best to proceed from here would be gratefully received!
