I think my Laptop Power Supply is out?

668 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  night_shift
When the laptop charger cord is plugged into the wall the green light on the charger is on so I know that is getting power, but then whenever i plug it into the computer no lights on the computer light up to say its charging or I can't turn the laptop on at all. Is there any tests I can do to see whats going on? I have a multimeter but not sure exactly what to test or if in fact I can use that to test the power supply? Any tips would be great.

Hi and welcome to TSF

What make and model is your laptop?

With the multimeter set on Volts dc, measure the voltage at the jack plug that fits into your laptop dc jack socket. The outer metal part of the plug is usually the negative -Ve and the inner pin the positive +Ve. Saying that with Dells there is a centre pin wich is a data pin, here you measure between the outer metal part to the inner metal part, the inner being positive +Ve. Dont short the +Ve to the data pin.

The voltage you are looking for should be printed on the power block/charger.
