I have installed new RAM though it isnt detected on the first screen

I have noticed the PC is now faster but the fact that the PC is still telling me it has 256MB RAM when i have just installed 2GB is worrying also since the new RAM it has started giving me an error message for explorer.exe saying there is a problem with the buffer
