What is the make and model # of your computer? What type of Maxtor drive is it? Is it a SATA HDD or is it an IDE (PATA/Ultra ATA)? If IDE, how do you have the jumper pin set? is there another drive on the same grey wide IDE cable?
If the drive is an IDE drive, the jumper pin should be set to CS (Cable Select) If there is another drive on the same cable, the Maxtor drives jumper should be set to Master, and the Maxtor drive should be at the end of the cable not in the middle. The other drive would be in the middle and the jumper set to Slave. Move the drive around and choose different Jumper pin settings. If a SATA drive, there are other considerations. If the Bios doesn't recognize the drive, then it has failed.

So the HDD is recognized in the Bios, it just says Unknown? Restart the computer and press F12 and run the Dell Diagnostics.
If this fails, remove the HDD and attach it to another computer with a USB Adapter or putting it into a USB Enclosure. go to Disk Management and see if you can initialize the drive and format it.
Or you can try mini tool partition manager and do it with that program.
