I got worms (mugly worm)

According to trend micro I have a worm called mugly.i that is sending emails using its own email engine, the scanner was not able to delete the worm. I cant manually delete the worm using the instructions they give because my regedit does not work, possibly the virus has done something to stop it from opening,

I get this error when opening regedit-

Let's try this first..

Download and unzip BFUzip from http://computercops.biz/zx/Merijn/bfu.zip
Run the program and click the Web button as shown here:


Use this URL to copy into the address bar of the Download script window:

Post a new HJT log after that.

Before we can proceed any further, please visit Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critcal Updates for your system (except Service Pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system). At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6.

Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it’s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

I think I have installed sp1a whatever that is, I clicked on auto update a few times and also downloaded from express on that link you posted.

How do I go to service pack 1a?
It still says Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
after downloading a whole load of stuff, the next upgrade it offers is service pack 2 but no 1a. Do you have a link to it?

The link sUBs gave you in his last reply is a direct download. Click on it, and save the exe to disk. Once saved, double-click on it to run it. Hope you got broadband...it's huge. :sayyes:

If you've done that already, please post a new HJT log.

Syner,

Thank you for updating Windows. The update would have cleared a bit of the infection. I would like you to perform some online scans now to see if there's still any hiden files in your machine.


Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Double-click the tmas-web-scan.exe icon
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Click "Start Scan"
After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.


Please include the reports from the online scans along with a new HJT log in your next reply

I cleaned those then i did trend micro scan and also the panda scan and no viruses were found!
So it must be clean now I think and I hope, only problem now is that I kinda borked my other computer that had the same virus, I got a bit over zealous with hijackthis and must have deleted the wrong thing (I thought it was the virus!) and now when the computer starts up I get loads of error messages about wininet.dll and other things, and it wont even connect to the network.

For the other computer which you messed up...

HiJackThis fixes can be undone by going to Config> Backups.
Select/tick every entry there & click on the 'Restore' button.
When you've done this, post a fresh HJT log here.

I may just reformat the hard drive of that computer and reinstall windows, its a couple of years old and could do with a spring clean, it seems a bit clogged up.
Restoring the HJT deleted files didnt change the situation, maybe its not something I did, but a virus possibly, I dont know for sure.

Do me a favor.
On that infected machine, first enable the viewing of all hidden/system files.
Then do a search for wininet.dll
There shouldbe more than one copy available.
The default copy lies in C:\Windows\System32 folder.
There should be another copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder.

Right click on them & select properties.
Note down their details..

  • filesize
    version number
Then post here to let me know.
