I get a sequence of 8 to 25 beeps on boot of laptop as the hard disk light is blinking and about 1 per hour after that. What could this mean? I get no error messages. Is my machine dying?

The keyboard is not stuck. I have monitor, keyboard and mouse attached to Dell 630 laptop, xp, 2 gig. Everything works (now).
