Most older games will not work correctly with Vista, which may be causing your issue. If I am thinking about the correct game, it is a PC/DOS program, correct?

It depends on how old your game is. If it's a Windows 9x game you could try running it in compatibility mode. Right click the exe and choose properties. Under the compatibility tab pick the version of Windows it's most likely to work with.
If it's a DOS game, I suggest getting DOSBox. It's a DOS emulator and it works very well with older games (you can even install Windows 3.1 on it!)
