Hi my girlfriend bought an HP DV2000 back in 2008. Its seems to run quite hot and even shut off once due to the heat. It also likes to make a lot of fan noise when its hot but also when it's running cool and at startup. I know that there have been a lot of issues of this kind that have resulted in fried computers. My question is would there be any point in trying to replace the heat sink and fan? I read somewhere that these issues result from a combination of bad videocard, processor, and heat sink. There was also discussion of HP revising the BIOS so that the fan would essentially run all the time in order to avoid frying the motherboard. Basically I'm wondering what can I do to protect my girlfriends computer and to solve the annoying whirring and whining noises it makes? or is it time to get a new computer? Thanks for any and all help!

Also check for dust around the vents, fan, and if u feel comfortable doing it, take the laptop apart, the top part, and check for dust buildup inside the laptop. A can ofair duster can help in this situation.

And to add, the fan is supposed to kick in when the laptop reaches a certain temperature. If its running all the time, then I'm pretty sure its because its overheating from dust build up. At least from my experience. This has been usually the case.

All the vents look pretty clean. I was going to open it up the other day until I found out what an ordeal it was going to be. I did some cleaning but didn't have the time to open it up all the way. Thanks for the input. I've been trying to read up on these computers and from what's out there I'm starting to wonder if just a bit of cleaning and dealing with the ridiculous fan noise is the best move. If it hasn't broken yet I feel like trying to replace anything could just kill the laptop. Any thoughts?

I already put a temp reader on so she can check to make sure her laptop isn't about to die. This one looks much nicer tho so thank you. The instructions look really helpful too. I'm much more of a visual learner and skipping around in the manual gets pretty tiring.
