Hi Everyone,

My HP Pavilion died!? Here is what happened. I was browsing the internet and the HP just shut down. I then started it up again, and 1/2 through boot up - it shut down again. Now it won't even think of starting! It's not the power supply. I bought a new one and it did not work.

Will someone please help me trouble shoot this BEAST!?

Thanks,

Greg:upset:

Hi RZA,

Thanks for your reply. This PC is not new. It's about 2 yrs. old now.

Would a bad hard drive inhibit the PC from even turning on? I understand that if the Hard Drive was dead it would not boot, but I can't even turn the PC on. No power at all!

Sounds more like a power supply went bad. If, as you say, you replaced the P/S, the next possibility could be the power switch, it's a simple momentary contact switch that connects to the motherboard. I'd check and see if the switch has died. The final suspect would, of course, be the motherboard...

Hi Johnwill,

Thanks for your comments. I did consider the switch, but I can't see a switch slowly going. After the first crash, the switch worked. The PC attempted to start, but it would crash about 1/2 through booting. This happened 2 or 3 times. I suppose I can check it my vom. Why not eh? That would be cool if it was the switch. I can see me now calling HP for a switch. I'll have to buy the case and power supply too! When the PC first went down, I tried to buy a new power supply from HP. They would only sell me the case. It will be a cold day in $#%^ before I purchase another "name" brand PC. The mother board is probably propriatary (sp?) too!

Ya know, there is a green LED on the back of the power supply that no longer lights. I needed to unplug the PC and plug it back in - in order for the LED to light. This happened 2 or 3 times while attemptting to start the system after the crash. Now the LED does not light at all. When everything was OK, the LED would illuminate. I have no idea what the light identifies. I'm sure it means something. By any chance would you or anyone out here?

Thanks again for your help.

None of my power supplies have a light, but you're right that it must mean something. The thing about the switch being bad is that if it makes intermittent contact while you're booting, it would power the system off. I'm out of ideas after that. :)

how is your power cable/power line ? do you have any kind of line conditioner or surge protector or maybe UPS connected ? Your power supply sometimes wont switch on if the power line is faulty. and does your PC overheat ?
