So I recently purchased a dv5 froma guy that supposedly just needed a new screen. I'm still running an 10 year laptop and I thought this would bea nice upgrade as it has an Intel i3 processor in it, and well I've installeed screens before, so I was excited to get my new laptop up and running.

Well I hooked it up to an external monitor and nothing, nothing but a blinking CAP LOCKS light on the keyboard. The cap locks LED was blinking 4 times. I looked up the LED codes for this model and came to find that 4 lights meant a graphics problem. Figured that would make sense since i couldn't get anything to display on the monitor after many attempts. I first tried pulling all components, RAM, HARD DRIVE, WIFI card, DVD, Reseated the CPU, still nothing.

So I went to the web and quickly found that a "black screen" issue on this model is very common, usually meaning the GPU needs to be reflowed. So I watched some youtube videos and trying heating up the GPU with a heat gun. I then let it cool put it back together gave it another try and ah ha I got an image on the screen, BUT it was an error message saying "CMOS CHECKSUM INVALID, the defaults will be loaded, please restart the computer (CMOS RESET 502). I figured no biggie, that could make sense since I pulled the CMOS battery when used the heat gun on the GPU. Well I rebooted and then got nothing, tried this several times and still got nothing. Tried pressing every F key on reboot to see if I could get into the BIOS and no luck.In fact the only way I can get the error message to come back is to pull the CMOS battery for at least 30 seconds and then try again. I tried a different CMOS battery and the same message appeared?

Any ideas? I'm quite upset about wasting the money on this that I did :(

I've tried the reset with the power button, but no go. And I did find that same video but I think I need a different utility as my dv5 is a dv5-2***.

Any suggestions on which one my model may need?

Thanks in advance!

Tried the following suggestions at BIOS Recovery for HP Pavilion dv6 Laptops | Dustin Barbour

but still no luck, booting with the windows and B key does nothin :(

I also checked out HP's website and this error message very common among their notebooks, but never really saw any resolutions.

Anyone else have any other suggestions? Does the fact that I can't get into the bios mean something? I also rehooked up the Hard drive and then got the 4 blinking LEDS again, which I believe means a graphics issue. However if it's still a graphics issue, why am I getting the error message displayed?

thanks!
