I am trying to get this printer to work but I cannot do it with any luck. I know that it doesn't need any drivers but it will not respond no matter what I try!

What makes you think the printer requires no drivers? I suggest you check this page at HP! HP Deskjet 540 Drivers

I looked all over that page and downloaded all kinds of drivers and nothing worked!

I think I may just update the os to xp.

Any other ideas???
