hp 309a problem photo printing

When printing photos the ink is coming out almost like a negaive phot but in various "off" colors. Some items in photo (like clothing on subjets) seem ok, but then trees in background or rocks look like they are somewhat flourescent. Could it be a setting problem? I did print on regular 8 1/2 x 11 regular paper from a photo program (Picasa) earlier in the week and it seemed fine and this was my first time back to printing on photo paper. I did a print quality test and also cleaned and alligned printheads, all ok.
HP is no help!
