I have a dead motherboard, but want to salvage the CPU, which is thermal pasted to a Gemini II heatsink which makes it impossible to use the release lever. Is there another way to release the CPU from its slot? Is there a way to detach the heatsink from the CPU?

Thanks

The cpu is secured into the socket on the motherboard, and then heatsink is secured on top of that. The Gemini II is the type of hsf that you have to take the motherboard out of the case to install. So, take the motherboard out of the case and undo the nuts on the bottom that attach the mounting hardware. Then pull off the gemini II, after than you can use the release lever and get the cpu out of the socket. Use 90% purity isopropyl alcohol to clean the paste from the base of the heatsink and the top of the cpu. Replace the protective covers on the cpu and motherboard socket. If you still have them, and you should.
