I just made purchased a new computer and would like to replace the HDD with an SSD. I haven't turned on the computer yet. Could I just swap out the drives and use a windows 10 boot disk, or is it better to turn the computer on and setup the windows 10 that it came with and then clone the SDD? (This will be go in the 2.5" bay of this computer - GL552VW | ROG - Republic Of Gamers | ASUS Global).

Thanks!

If you have a Windows 10 Install disc with an activation code and key, then a clean install to the SSD is best. But you may need to install some drivers, which you can get from the Asus web site, but probably not. The OEM computer's Windows 10 may have added bloat ware installed.

Hi mate and welcome to the TechSupport forum!

I agree with spunk.funk - it will be best if you install the OS directly on the SSD, and furthermore - you can use the HDD that the computer came with as a secondary storage location.

For the fresh installation process with two drives you can follow these steps:

1. First plug in only the solid state drive.
2. After that insert the CD or the USB stick with the copy of the OS.
3. Boot off that device and install the OS onto the SSD as AHCI (since this will give you the best performance for SSD).
4. Lastly, plug in the other hard disk and format it. After that take a look at the boot order in BIOS just to make sure it's the right one and the OS will start from the SSD.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Cheers! :)
