Hi-
I am new to the forum and see a lot of knowledge here, so I am wondering if I can get some helpful tips on setting up my home network and toubleshooting an issue I already have.
First some background: I live in a home served by a small all fiber to the home company which is partly owned by the local neighborhood association. from this one connection, I get Cable, Phone and 100Mbps Internet service and the home was wired when I moved in 5 years ago. From the media panel, I have one connection from the "media converter" (there is no modem, and no router per se) the connection goes to a Netgear 8 port switch which serves the 8 pre wired jacks in various rooms in my house. From one of these jacks in a central location in the house, I placed a wireless access point to service my wireless needs. This worked fine for a number of years and my Internet and network speeds screamed until last year when I started having problems. I traced this to various appliances trying to obtain the same IP address from the "router". A call to the provider got me to the bottom of the issue, I only have 15 IP addresses to work with directly from the source and with my PCs, Ipads, etc, I was exhausting them. So they suggested I install my own router which would only use one of my 15 IP addresses and could serve up its own internal IP addresses to all of my appliances in my home.
We had an unused Linksys 4 port wired router at my work so I configured it and ran the cable from the media converter to it and then from one of the ports to the already installed 8 port switch. Everything seemed to work fine.
however, here is the problem, which did not exist before- My wireless connections will stall out for long periods of time and I will go from connection speeds of 50-60 Mbps (wireless n) to 1-4 Mbps. Also, even on wired connections which always test between 80-90 my streaming services, like Netflix will kick me out every 15-30 minutes for no apparent reason. This never happened before I installed the new router. So, here are my questions;
1. Does the way I have this connected seem correct? Modem (media converter)>router> switch
2. Should I buy an 8 port router and replace their switch with that instead?
3. Is the problem likely the router (although it worked fine in my office) either being only 10/100 rather than gigabit or some problem with it or between my router and the outside world?
Should I start over with thinking through this or how should I go about troubleshooting? I already tried a new wireless access point and that did nothing at all.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
