Hi,

I have just started moving my users' home folders to a new data server. I have 7 users moved now. However I've noticed with 2 of them, that when they login to their computers, a folder is being created for them in the old location, even though the redirection is still to the new server.

AD is a Windows 2003 Server box. The users profiles are redirected in the profiles tab to a location on another server.

The users were pointing to \\oldserver\staff\home\username. Oldserver also being a Windows 2003 Server box.

The users that have been moved are now poitning to \\newserver\staff\home\username. The new server is a Windows 2008 Server box.

So I asked the users to logoff. I changed the location of the folder redirection. I cut and pasted their files to the new location. Then asked them to login again. I did the same procedure with some of the other users, and when I did their own folder on the old server disappeared once login had occured and everything was up to day.

But I noticed that these users folders hadn't disappeared. And not only that but they had the default folders recreated in them; My Pictures, My Music, My Videos. I deleted one users folder manually, asked her to logoff and on again, and the folder recreated itself.

Anyone have any idea why this would happen? And how to stop it?

Thanks,

Jody

Southseapirate > you're right. That is the case. And that was happening for others. I was just hurrying along while people were away from their desk so they didn't have to wait. It didn't affect this problem though.

Tom > there's 5 other users this is not happening for. The permissions are fine. Only difference to old permissions is Creator Owner entry that was there by default when the folders were setup. But that entry shouldn't affect anything. It's not affecting the others.

Did you create a new policy or did you edit your old one.

Assuming the later, create a new policy and try it.

What operating system are the clients using?
If you are running Windows 7, please check the Applications and Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Folder Redirection in the Event-Viewer

I never use the default policy for anything extra, I always create new policies. I even name the policy to remind myself what that policy is doing.

I've seen issues with using or editing the default policy, that's the only reason I suggested it

That particular change is in the Default Domain Policy alright. It has been since before my time here.

I'm going to continue changing users. It doesn't seem to have an adverse affect. The users who are having a folder created for them in the old location when logging in are still being redirected to the new server. I've saved documents on a client PC logged on as one of them, and those files appear on the new server, not the old one. I just don't understand why the folder is being recreated.

I think moving more staff and seeing who else it effects might help me narrow down the issue.
