My uncles computer is having serious problems. Seeing as you guys have helped me with my own, I told him that with your help I might be able to fix his.

Ran first Adaware scan and it hung at the System Restore folder. Disabled system restore and it still hung. Tried using Trend Micro AntiSpyware, THEN Adaware, still didn't work, even though Trend said it was clean. With nothing else in mind, I thought I'd run HJT and get a log and see if you guys could make sense of it. If there's anything else I can run before getting an HJT log, please let me know.

Thanks

Hello..

Let's get started with this..

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

Please download cureit:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Save it to your desktop but don't do anything with it yet.

Next:

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a free version of the program.
  1. Install Ewido Security Suite
  2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  4. The program will now open to the main screen.
  5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode:

Run drweb - cureit
Double-click the "drweb-cureit.exe" and click "ok" in the prompt window that will open, asking "start the express scan now".
It will first make a quick scan of your system, let it clean what it finds, and when it says "done" in the lower left corner click on all your drive's.
A red dot will mark the selected drive(s) . Then hit the pedestrian who now has turned green.
Click on the green man in the right corner, it will scan ALL your drive's, hit yes to all.

Now open Ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • Clean anything it finds.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close Ewido.

Reboot back into normal mode and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Please print out or save this page to your desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Boot Into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

View Hidden Files and Folders
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Potential Uninstallations
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

Spyware Assassin - It’s rogueware (or known to be rogueware in the past) and we highly recommend that you uninstall it. Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection.

Start HijackThis Fix
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A045DC85-FC44-45be-8A50-E4F9C62C9A84}_ - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] winsys32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] winsys32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] winsys32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Restore] scrgrd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Assassin v.4.0] C:\Program Files\Spyware Assassin 4.0\Spyware Assassin.exe

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

File/Folder Deletions
Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

winsys32.exe <-- search for and delete via start || search"
scrgrd.exe
<-- search for and delete via start || search"

C:\Program Files\Spyware Assassin 4.0\

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with

Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Standard
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and the log from Kasperskyso that we can check if your system is clean.

Ran HiJackThis and deleted selected results. Searched for files above and found nothing.

The Kapersky scan scan got as far as C:\System Volume Information\_restore...ACC-91A6-B238ACB5F30B}\RP18\A0011802.sys and froze. It indicated 1 virus before getting to that file.

Adaware also freezes at the same file.

Thank you guys for your help thus far. I've never had a system this hard to fix before!

Let's flush System Restore first

Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
  • Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
  • Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK

Then proceed with the scans

I had already switched it off after Adaware froze the first time. Sorry I forgot to mention this.

If you're certain that it's off, we'll have to do it manually

From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
  • Tick - Show hidden files and folder
  • Untick - Hide file extensions for known types
  • Untick - Hide protected operating system files
  • Untick - Use simple file sharing (Recommended)
Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

Right-click the C:\System Volume Information folder & select Properties.

From the Security tab, click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on.

Click OK, and then click OK again.

Double-click the System Volume Information folder to open it.
Delete the contents of this folder - _restore...ACC-91A6-B238ACB5F30B}

Undo the above steps to hide the System Restore folder again

not sure about ad-aware, have you tried SpyBot?
In any case from what kaspersky tells us:

delete the contents of this folder (not the folder itself) C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp!http://www.geekstogo.com/modules.php?modid=5&action=download&id=49 and install it.
Run CleanUp! Set the program up as follows:
  • Click "Options..."
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Congratulations Your Log is Clean!!

If you are still having trouble, please dont continue with these instructions just yet. LET ME KNOW!

Otherwise, we have a few clean up items to deal with.

1. System Restore
Now that we know your system is clean, we want to purge any potentially infected restore points. To do that, complete the following:

Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK.

To re-enable this function - simply uncheck this same box, and click "apply" and "ok"

2. Reset Hidden Files & Folders
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is UNchecked. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are invisible. CHECK the Hide protected operating system files option.

Also Consider...
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

How is she running now? Any further problems? If not, Good work, and Happy Computing!

Please reply once more so we know you have read these measures.
