Hi, I've got a slow computer that I'm trying to fix. I ran Ad-Aware Se Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy, and CWShredder, and Norton Antivirus scan. Here is my HJT Log, help would be greatly appreciated. This is with no programs running. They were ran in safe mode except for CWShredder and Norton
Thanks.

Hello and welcome to TSF .

You may like to subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools located near the top of this page, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant email Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Your PC is not showing much, still follow the next steps to ensure that nothing is hiding.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not (while in Safe Mode) be available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Downloads

1. Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Do not install if you are using the 64 bit version of windows. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_whichcpu.exe

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

The following is the alternate download location for CleanUp!. Please download the program from this link if the main link is out of service:

http://www.stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe

2. Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
________________________________________________

Fix

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Cleanup!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
Do not logoff or reboot when prompted.

AVG Anti-Spyware

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scan

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on
located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on
    then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

The computer runs better than it did before all the scans. But it still runs like there are many programs open when I try to open a simple program like AIM (aol instant messenger) that should open quickly. It is getting better though. Hope this explination is good enough. If not I can give specifics.

Hello jmooney5115

Please search and look for ComboFix.txt, not ComboFix.exe, and see if you can find it.

I looked in C:\ again and it wasn't there, and I searched for ComboFix.txt but there were no search results. Searched the whole computer.

Hello jmooney5115

Please look for a a folder C:\sUBs and delete it. After that, locate combofix.exe and delete it too.

Once you can delete the above folder and file, download and run Combofix, according to the following instructions:

Download combofix from this location:
**Save it to your desktop**

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Multiple AV

It appears that you are running two antivirus programs, namely, Norton Internet Securuty and AVG Free Edition simultaneously. I can also see the presence of another Anti virus, "AntiVir" in your system. It does not provide you with any extra protection though it may seem so. On the contrary these two programs may interfere with each other creating serious problems regarding security vulnerability as well as system stability. Please uninstall any two of the above Anti viruses and keep the one of your choice. Let me inform you, amongst these three, only Norton Internet Security offers Firewall feature beside regular Anti virus features.

________________________________________________________________

So with your next post please provide, ComboFix.txt and a new HJT Log.

The AVG's protection is not on. Which anti virus program do you see other than Norton so I can uninstall it? I haven't yet done the above mentioned directions yet; will get to it tomorrow.

Thanks

You have AVG Free and AntiVir (should be listed as AV in your Add/Remove Programs List). It does not matter whether the protection is on or off, having multiple AVs on board is a very bad idea.
As it seems from your last post that you intend to keep Norton Internet Security, please Uninstall both AVG Free and AV (AntiVir).

I deleted AVG but I could not find AntiVir in the ADD/REMOVE programs list or in C:\Program Files. If AV is AntiVir is it possible to uninstall it from HJT?

I did delete combofix.exe, but there was no sUBS folder in C:\sUBS. I downloaded and ran the new ComboFix.exe and after it said "A log report would be created at C:\combofix.txt" I went to C:\ there was no combofix.txt. There was a combo.bat file that dissapeared as soon as I opened the folder. Also I searched for combofix.txt and there were no results.

Hello jmooney5115

Please go to Start> Control Panel> Add/ Remove Programs list and see if you can find an entry "AV". If it is there, see if you can recognize this program. Please let me know if you can identify this program or not. The program folder should be located at C:\Program Files, provided you use default location while installing programs in your PC. So check here too.

________________________________________________________________

Please go to Start> Run, Copy- Paste the following line in the quote box and press "Enter".

C:\ComboFix.txt
See if this opens up anything in a Notepad. If it does, please paste the content of the file here, otherwise let me know.

__________________________________________________________________

Please open HijackThis, and do a System Scan and post here the content of the log file it produces.

_______________________________________________________________

So with your next post please provide the above information and a new HijackThis log. Also let me know about your system's overall behaviour.

The computer could not find combofix.txt when I did Start>Run>C:\ComboFix.txt it gave me an error message. Also I could not find anything that resembled AV under Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs list. I recognized everything that was on there. I also looked under C:\Program Files, no luck though. I removed AVG but it is still on the list of ADD/REMOVE Programs, is that normal? Does AOL software cause computers to slow down? We don't use AOL so I was going to take all of the AOL software off.

Here is the HJT Log:

Hello jmooney5115

It seems that you just deleted AVG folder from C:\Program Files location. If you need to uninstall anything from your computer you should always do it using Add/Remove Program, as most of the softwares installs different components necessary for its proper functioning to different other locations along with its main installation folder. If you do not uninstall a program from Add/Remove program [or using the uninstaller supplied with the program], you can never uninstall it properly and the entry will be there in your Add/Remove program list, and this is what has happened with your AVG .

To solve this problem the best option would be to reinstall AVG Free Anti Virus again. Please download it from here [if you do not have the installer already with you]: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
  • Disconnect from the internet.
  • Disable Norton Internet Security.
  • Install AVG Free
  • Reboot your system.
  • Now go to Start>Control Panel> Add Remove Program and uninstall AVG Free from there.

Regarding AV, if you can not find it- do not worry about it.

Regarding AOL I do not think that I can be of much help. In my country AOL is non existent, so I never used AOL. I think if you are not going to need it, then you can safely banish it from your pc, though the choice is completely yours.

Please post a fresh HJT log here for review, after going through the process of reinstalling and uninstalling AVG. Please tell me how is your overall system's behaviour too.
