It's basically just a piece of crap. Internet Explorer shuts down ALOT. Nice little blue screen of death pops up quite often too. Slower than molasses. Getting a new one next week - just wanted to see what could be done with this one.

Older system, Windows98....*sigh*

Do you have the Win98 CD? Go to Start>Run and type sfc and then hit enter. Make sure the 'Scan for altered files' radio button is checked, then click Start. This will check for corrupt or missing files, and it will prompt you for the Win98 CD if needed.

Have you tried a repair of Internet Explorer? Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs then highlight Microsoft Internet Explorer and click on Add/Remove. A new dialog box should open, giving you the options to Add a component or Repair Internet Explorer. Choose the Repair option and follow any prompts.

Win98 is notorious for Startup/Shutdown issues, and yes, BSODs (Blue Screen of Death). Is the system overheating? Are all the fans (case, CPU, Power Supply Unit) spinning when it is powered up? It is dirty inside? (Can you see dust bunnies clogging the PSU fan opening on the back of the system?) It could be faulty memory...or one of many other things, unfortunately...is there an error code which appears with the BSOD? Is it the same each time?

You can try a memory checking tool:

http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp

Run it in a loop, 6-10 times.

Sounds like you're ready for a new system anyway....but this one could be rehabbed for simple word processing, kids or donation to charity. Sometimes a thorough cleaning and a complete format and clean install can breathe life into a troubled system.

That's all I have....you may want to ask in our Windows 95 & 98 forum after attempting any or all of the above. Good luck.
