Hello,

I have recurring IE pop-ups ... even though i don't use IE (I use Firefox). I ran Microsoft Anti Spyware, AD Aware and Norton. I found something in registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps that regenerates itself ... a common complaint I see!

I followed the instruction on the ' Please, Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log.' thread ... Please can someone look at the log below and advise?

KRC HijackThis Analyzer result log:

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Please subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. To do this, please click the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread".

Save the next instructions in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then. You should not have any browsers on.

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!. .

  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them in your next post.

Unplug your computer from the Internet when you have finished downloading

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me.

Ok I followed the steps in your last post.
-Ran Trend Micro AntiSpyware - (posted results above)
-Reebooted in safe mode & Deleted DAP, ran HJT, deleted the entries you suggested.
-Deleted C:\Program Files\DAP\
-Reebooted to normal mode and ran full scan with Trend Micro House Call (it found nothing ... it didn't give me a log but I suspect it's because it didn't find anything?)
-Ran HJT scan ... here is the log:

Oh yeah, you asked earlier about Vitria. It's a message driven software integration platform ... very similar to Tibco.

I wanted you to run TMAS a second time, to make sure nothing was left behind. HJT looks ok, you may fix this itme:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

No viruses by Trend Micro - Great!

How is your computer now?

Hi,

I ran TMAS again (see log below)
then

-Reebooted in safe mode ran HJT (didn't see the 'R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing' entry - see log below called HijackThis_safemode.log)

-Reebooted to normal mode and HJT again (this time it found 'R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing' which I deleted, then ran again - see log below called HijackThis_normalmode.log)

I still have the same two IE popups from some gambling website.

I looked in the registry and have an entry that looks suspicious and always regenerates when I delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps

Any ideas?

Try this:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix.exe - but do NOT run it yet.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Once in Safe Mode, double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.
Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode.
Post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Try rebooting your computer. Check the registry as u have before. If it's not there - then the infection has gone.

Report back, and i'll set you up with some protection to prevent infectiosn in the future.

Your log is clean. Well done

Do you have any more problems with your computer? If not, you should be set to go.

However, there still remains a few bits of housekeeping ...

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear Java Cache
  1. Click Start >Settings>Control Panel
  2. Click the Java Plugin Icon
  3. Click the Cache tab
  4. Click the Clear button and click OK to confirm
Note: Please repeat this procedure for each "Java Plugin" button in your Control Panel

Follow the instructions outlined here to clear Sun Java's cache.

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent hiccup, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
Have a safe & happy computing day.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Ok I've followed these steps and fingers crossed will remain virus free. The pop ups have not resurfaced and everything looks fine. I do feel that that some damage has been done around the time of the infection ... such as my Windows Search Assistant (Start -> Search -> For Files or Folders) doesn't work and my machine has been sluggish.

Do you know of any software that might be of use fixing the problems left behind from removed viruses?

thanks again!!

Hi swisstony,

Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. You may need your Windows 2000 Install disc so have it handy.
