I should have added....

I have MacAfee Suite. MacAfee keeps alerting me on a virus called
Below is the original post I've posted over at the McAfee forum. They suggested to do the log (which I've posted here earlier) and post it here for further advise by you guys. In the meantime I've done a DOS scan/clean on the computer, as suggested by McAfee. But when I then checked the system with TrojanHunter, I'm still getting the same (below) McAfee warning on this MALFORMED ARCHIVE VIRUS. So here's the posting that appeared at the McAfee forum and you have my log (in my previous posting). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MALFORMED ARCHIVE. I'm prompted to remove it. I do. Next thing it's there again. It has different names such as J879Y.exe or QqyZC.exe or 4f1Lll.exe etc, all in Documents and Settings Temp files.

I tried to go through the Trojan Virus Manual Removal Steps. It tells me to go to Safe Mode. As I follow the instructions, everything rings right. But the two files which contain WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI don't have the Read-only checked, so I leave them unchecked. Then there is NO line beginning with 'load=' or 'run=' in the C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI window. Also, there is nothing beginning with 'shell=explorer.exe' in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI window.

I guess I must be doing something wrong. But the virus warning from MacAfee on the MALFORMED ARCHIVE virus is not going away.

THANKS for your advise.

Hello [email protected] and welcome to TSF,

I'm not seeing any apparent malware in your HijackThis log. We'll run a few tools and see if any is revealed.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

Also be sure to carry out the instructions in the order given.

***************************************************

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
**AVG Anti-Spyware is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on
located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on
    then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

-------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

-------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

AVG Anti-Spyware results
Panda results
ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log

Thanks very much Reid for your response. I've followed exactly the steps you requested, and here are the logs and reports (Hijackthis; ComboFix, AVG; Panda.)

Looking forward to your response and suggestion.

Thanks,

Nathaniel

Hello Nathaniel,

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

***************************************************

Disable Ad-Aware Ad-Watch as it may interfere with the fix below:
  • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
  • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic"
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
  • Uncheck both of those boxes.
***************************************************

Close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. 'Check' the following entries:

It's still there.........and more...

Hi Ried,

I followed up on your advise last night. Thanks. This morning I ran a TrojanHunter scan. McAfee alerted me during the TH scan -- again -- of the Malformed Archive and I deleted the file, yet again. The point is it hasn't gone away. But even more interesting, TH discovered a trojan called Worm.Qiv.100 which was located in the Combofix file which I downloaded (per your instructions). Anyway, TH removed the trojan and renamed the file. So that's where I am on this. The Malformed Archive, whatever that is, is still there even though McAfee keep deleting it evety time, plus I've collected a trojan in the process.

Any thoughts?

Hi Nathaniel,

First--that was a false positive by Trojan Hunter regarding combofix. Which file did it rename?

By any chance is McAfee only alerting to a Malformed Archive when you are scanning with Trojan Hunter?

Thanks Ried!

Much thanks, that's a relief! Sorry, I haven't written down the name of the combofix file TH has renamed.

And now that you ask, I think yes, McAfee only alerts on Malware Archive when TrojanHunter performs a scan. I think I know what you're going to say about that, but I'll wait for you.

And thanks for all your help. This is a great site!

 That's right, it seems to be an issue with McAfee and Trojan Hunter. The solution so far, is to disable McAfee while scanning with TH.

Would you mind trying to locate that renamed combofix file? I'd like to forward that info to the author of the combofix tool.

If you have the latest version of Trojan Hunter, there should be a quarantine folder. Please post the contents of your latest scan here.

If your version of TH is prior to V4.6, TH leaves the 'infected' file in it's original location and merely renames it to render it inoperable. If this is the version that you have, please zip up combofix.exe and attach here.

Right click combofix.exe and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) folder.
You should now see combofix.zip on your desktop.
Once you click the 'Reply' for this thread, click 'Manage Attachments' and upload the combofix.zip.

Thank you.

If there aren't any more problems, you should be all set. You're already doing a great job keeping your system clean and to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs. (if you do not already have them):

Download SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

Download Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
  • Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it.
  • From within the folder, double-click install.bat
  • Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
  • Then return to the main menu.
  • Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4
Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

Ried, thanks

I've downloaded the files you suggested, but I can't seem to get spyad gooing. I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. Maybe I'm not familiar enough with the zipping process although I'm using it all the time for my music.

Thanks again, you're doing a wonderful job here.

What's your position on the VISTA?

Hiya,

Once you've downloaded the IESpyAd zip, you want to 'Extract All'. It will automatically unzip to the C: drive.

What's happening with it on your end?

Regarding Vista...I prefer to wait until it's out for a while and make sure all the bugs have been worked out.

When I download it....

I get:

winzip self-extractor-ie-spyad.exe

with 5 options: UNZIP RUN-WINZIP CLOSE ABOUT HELP

I press UNZIP

I get:

WINZIP self-Extractor -- 13 files unzipped successfully.

That's it. I have no idea where it is and I to find it or what to do next....

Ok--it has unzipped.
  • Click Start>My Computer
  • Under the heading of 'Hard Drives', double click C:\
  • Once that opens, look for ie-spyad and follow the instructions I gave previously.

Hi Ried......

Thanks for everything again. The system seems to be working fine. The only thing is that Microsoft Outlook is painfully slow seen I've installed SPYAD. Any thoughts?

Not really--I've never had that issue nor has anyone else mentioned it to me. I would suggest asking that question in the Windows XP section and see if the experts there can help you with that. :sayyes:
