My PC is plagued with "helpctr.exe virus", if it is called such.
Symptoms:
- When I try to use any software program, the respective help program would load on its own again and again. For example, as soon as I click on the address bar in IE, the IE help would pop open, close it, type a few letters, pops again. Same with any other program I try to use, e.g. Task Manager, WinZip, Ad-aware, Norton, etc. anything I get my hands on.
- Numerous helpctr.exe and suspicious helpHost.exe, helpSvc.exe processes taking up 100% of CPU.

- Error message showing over and over again, saying something like, "helpctr.exe - Cannot initialize application(0x0000142)
I scanned my PC with Spybot, Ad-aware(corrected a few registries) and Norton(no virus found) - did not solve the problem. I also installed the Microsoft security update . I even reinstalled Windows XP with the recovery disk that came with my PC, but, no luck.
please help me.

thanks.

You should read the stickies in the "Hijack This Help Forum" further on down the page.

Actually I didn't see what I was looking for there. Download Hijack This and extract it to C:\HJT

Then do a system scan and save a logfile. Post that logfile (Copy and paste) along with your symptoms in the Hijack This Help area.

I am including a HijackThis log. Would you please take a look at it and advise me what to do next?
Thank you so very much!!

Nothing your describing is showing in your log.

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Once it has finished save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.
