Alright it's like this. Customer brought computer in and he can't open anything except for a few non-important things.

He's running a Dell Dimension 4600 with Windows XP Home. Every time you try to open something it says Windows cannot open the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

The thing is that he's the administrator, i think anyway. Is there a way to check that without going into the control panel and checking user accounts? If so, how? If it's something else please let me know...

Tried what you said and it wont let me Start Run control userpassword2

Tried getting into safe mode and it seems to lock up.

Well i'm sick of trying to troubleshoot this ongoing problem. Before i reload the whole thing, anybody got any last ditch efforts?

First Open Command Prompt (WindowsKey+R will open 'Run' then type in 'cmd') else Start/Run/'cmd' else Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command prompt

Once its Opened type in 'Net User'
you'll get the names of all the available accounts
Then type in 'Net User XYZ'
(XYZ=Account you have logged in with)
now you'll get detailed info about the particular account including whether its in the group of 'Administrators'

Acc to me the problem seems to be virus related as long as he is not logged as the administrator follow the following link for security related help
