If both computers has ethernet network interfaces for cable, then buy
"crossover cable" - it is on first sight the same like "patch cable", only it has crossed wires inside. This cable can connect both computers without other device (switch). Then set IP addresses,
on first comp. for example: 192.168.1.10,255.255.255.0, (on properties of ethernet card with connected cable)
and second comp. 192.168.1.11,255.255.255.0.
And you have functional connection.
