I have 2 hard drives that share a motherboard (can only have one in at a time obviously) and my wife has pulled one out and inserted the other without shutting down first (DOH!). When she put in the second hard drive, nothing seemed to happen - at this point she panicked (?) and removed the second hard drive, again without shutting down. Then she tried to shut down and couldnt get the start menu to appear. So she turned the power off! When she switched on again, she is getting the message about FATs not matching. What do I do??? Apart from kill my wife?

Welcome to the forums alaricb.............:D

First What OS are you using?

Did both of these drives ever run in that machine together or did you just decide to install another drive and then the issues started.

If you have the specs on this machine it would help to post them here or do as best as you can.............

re OS

firstly, I am using win95. Secondly, I have never had both these drives in at once (there isnt enough room). I have never had a problem before in the 6 or 7 yrs - it is just because my wife took one out without switching off. Other spec: 32MB RAM, 2GB HD, P150 chip

If this machine still works you will have dodged a bullet.

Is this machine like an HP or Compaq that comes with restore disks?

Can you get into the bios and see if it detects the drive?
