I am running Redhat Linux 7.3 and have downloaded the 2.4.20 kernal. When I try to run the make command, for example "make Mrproper" or any other make command I get this error message.

" No rule to make target" Arch/i386/makefile . stop"

Any ideas?

it means its missing a makefile, the make command looks for a file called "Makefile" of course no quotes, if you are using Redhat you might want to download their RPM'd version and install it that way to be safe, however if you're getting adventurous building a vanilla (aka plain) kernel from kernel.org can be very fun ;)
