I am pretty good with desktops but when it comes to servers i am admittedly lost :p

I am going to build a 1u server for a game server i run. The game server itself uses Java and Mysql for the database. So fast drives are important for the database and we know that java is pretty resource hungry in CPU and Ram.

Need a pretty strong server. This is going to be a ongoing build as i cannot afford to build it all at once or buy a complete server.

Would like it to have Dual Opterons, probably start off with 2GB of Ram but need the option to be able to upgrade up to 16GB of Ram. I will upgrade as money allows and player count increases.

I should probably start with a case and PSU. Anybody here have experience with 1u servers and have an idea of what type of case i should have?

1U... as in rackmount?

Unless you're pressed for space, I'd say this is an unnecessary cost addition to a server prospect.

What's your anticipated load?

Well the server needs to go to a datacenter for colocation. My connection cannot handle enough players and it needs to be hosted on a 100mb connection.

Server load as in amount of players? I need the server to be able to handle 1000 players. With my current connection i can handle only 300.

It needs to be 1u as i cannot afford to pay colocation for anything larger :)

Ah, I had no idea this server was for so many users ;)

I understand now. I thought you were talking about making a server behind a standard residential broadband connection.

I have no personal experience with these kinds of servers, but I know there are people here who do.
