I'm not sure if these two problems are related, but they started right around the same time. I have been getting pop-ups titled Aurora, and neither AdAware nor SpyBot have been able to clean these. Also, I am having an error message pop up saying that a problem has been encountered with Windows Explorer and asking me to send a report or not send a report. As soon as I close the box, the message appears again within 5 seconds. It also causes many open programs to freeze. As a result, I have not been able to succesfully install or uninstall any new programs or use my computer in any productive way. Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated. Here is my HijackThis Log.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Microsoft AntiSpyware. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm

Right click on this link http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DelO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Download Nailfix Utility at http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?download=20050711214630636 Save it to your desktop. Do NOT run it yet.

Download dsrfix.zip http://www.atribune.org/downloads/dsrfix.zip and save it to your desktop. Unzip the dsrfix.zip contents to your desktop. This will create a new folder on your desktop named dsrfix. Do NOT open that folder yet.

Download APT http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apt and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.

* Open the folder you just created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for c:\windows\system32\kihcmb.exe r .
* Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for kihcmb.exe . Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
* In APT again, Select c:\windows\system32\kihcmb.exe r and Click Kill3.
* Then immediately delete kihcmb.exe from your system32 folder.

Close APT.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Once in Safe Mode, double click on nailfix.exe.
Click 'Next' in the setup, then make sure 'Run Nailfix' is checked and click 'Finish'.
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: SearchToolbar - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\zxwax.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dinst] C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lexizlg] c:\windows\system32\kihcmb.exe r
NOTE: The 04 entry may have changed names if you have rebooted since posting the log; look for an entry with a similar format, that will always end in a single letter r.
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present---Unless you put this in yourself
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.static.topconverting.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)

O23 - Service: Network Security Service (%AF夶À¨) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\appfp32.exe (file missing)

Now open the folder dsrfix on your desktop.
* Double click on dsrfix.bat
* A window will pop up briefly then close, this is normal.

Click Start>Run and type in
regsvr32 /u zxwax.dll
Click OK

Do the same for
lsass.dll
dffvej.dll
q4196250_disk.dll

Locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\zxwax.dll
C:\WINDOWS\lsasss.dll
C:\WINDOWS\gaSrve.exe
C:\WINDOWS\timer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
c:\windows\system32\kihcmb.exe (or whatever the name may have changed to, as noted above).
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dffvej.dll
C:\WINDOWS\q4196250_disk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appfp32.exe

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for System Startup Service (SvcProc) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled. Repeat for Service: Network Security Service (%AF夶À¨)

Finally, restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the report log from the Ewido scan.

Some progress made, some problems

Thanks for your quick response! I followed the instructions as closely as I could, but experienced the following issues:

-I could not locate the file C:\windows\system32\kihcmb.exe r or a file that looked similar

-When I tried to run nailfix.exe, my computer kept givng me the message that Windows could not find nailfix.exe. I tried downloading it to two different locations on my computer, and couldn't get either to work

I went ahead with the rest of the instructions (and I hope that's not going to cause problems.) So here's my new HijackThis Log:

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say no:

C:\Program Files\Creative\Creative NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra\NOMAD Explorer\d_cat.exe

* Open the APT folder you created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for c:\windows\system32\wqzvnr r
and c:\windows\system32\lkwydoo.exe r .
* Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for lkwydoo.exe and wqzvnr . Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
* In APT again, Select c:\windows\system32\wqzvnr r
c:\windows\system32\lkwydoo.exe r and Click Kill3.
* Then immediately delete lkwydoo.exe and wqzvnr from your system32 folder.

Close APT.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

c:\windows\system32\lkwydoo.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccnseoh] c:\windows\system32\wqzvnr r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pfqhml] c:\windows\system32\lkwydoo.exe r Or any 04 entry ending in a single r
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.static.topconverting.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.static.topconverting.com (HKLM)

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

c:\windows\system32\wqzvnr
c:\windows\system32\lkwydoo.exe

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it back here.

I have no idea what crazywinnings and topconverting are. I check them to be fixed each time, and they keep reappearing. Now I'm also getting frequent popups that claim I need to download a program to fix my registry. Each popup has a different web address. As always, I would appreciate your help. Here's my latest log:

Please do the following:

Download L2MFix - Double click L2mfix.exe & answer Yes when prompted. Then click the Install button to extract the files to a newly created folder named - L2mfix

Double click L2mfix.bat
Select option #1 - Run Find Log - by typing 1
This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening for a period of few minutes. When it has finished, you will be presented with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

If you receive an error - \system32\Autoexec.nt is not suitable for running MS-Dos applications, you will need to visit this website to download additional files.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Also need you to do this..

Go to start > run - type cmd <Press Enter>
In the black box that appears, type dir /a h C:\WINDOWS\System32\dffvej.dll

Tell me what it says..

Go to the directory - C:\Windows\System32
Please zip these files up & attach them in your next post:
  • dffvej.dll
    dffveja.dll
I need to have a better look at them before determining the next course of action.

Thanks.

If you do not have it yet, download & install Winzip

Start Winzip & select File > Wizard.
The wizard would guide you through the procedure of zipping a file.

When I try to zip the file, it tells me the file is missing. (Even though it's there when I run a search.) Any suggestions?

Go to Start>Run - type cmd <Press Enter>
type attrib -h -r -s C:\Windows\System32\dffvej*.dll <Press Enter>
type exit <Press Enter>

Then copy those files to your Desktop. That should stop them from playing hide&seek

I think the computer gods are laughing at me right now. I did as you said, but am not able to move the files to the desktop. When I try it says: "Cannot move file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

Any other suggestions?

Also, I've got a bunch of new folders that I don't recognize. There's one called: System Volume Information that has a number of folders in it, and the folder titles are in blue.

There's also a bunch of folders in my Windows directory that have titles like: $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$ and these are also in a blue font. Do you know what these are?

The files/folders you just described are legitimate.

With regards to the infected files, are you saying that you can still view them from Windows Explorer but is unable to copy them?

I can't find dffvej.dll anywhere, but dffveja.dll is there. I even dragged it over to winzip, but when I click on the button to zip it, I get the error message.
