Was wondering if you guys could help me out with this. I'm looking for a new processor but I find that every one I want is not listed under "compatible cpu's" on the MSI site. For example, the quad core 3.0ghz 95watt propus is listed on the MSI site, but it's a different CPU code than the 95watt 3.0ghz propus cpu on newegg. The last time I upgraded a processor, all I did was look at the socket and thermal design, but I don't know if it's the same with every mobo.

This is my mobo

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9N6PGM2-V2.html#/?div=Overview

It's pretty much the same for every processor I found on newegg. Same exact cpu listed under cpu support just a different cpu code :upset:

Thanks in advance.

If the CPU is not listed on the compatibility list it probably won't work.

As far as I know, there is only one 640 Propus:
This is the actual number of the proc: ADX640WFK42GM
Newegg generally lists the retail box ID # (ADX640WFGMBOX)
Same CPU.

FYI: If your budget will handle it, the Phenom II X4 proc's will show you better overall performance.

Ohh that would make sense. Thanks for the answer. As for the Phenom II x4 idea, as of right now I dont know if I can get one. The processor is actually being gifted to me by someone, so I don't want to push it!

Newegg seems to only one Phenom II x4 compatible with my mobo :Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 820 Deneb 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 4MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor HDX820WFK4FGI - Processors - Desktops

Would that one be faster than the propus?

That would be a toss up. The 640 has the (slightly) higher core speed, but the 820 has the L3 cache which will allow the proc to do many of its calculations without read/write to RAM.

What will be the primary use of this computer?

edit: Actually the 925 they list (HDX925WFGIBOX - HDX925WFK4DGI) is also supported

Something I find very odd: The MSI support page lists the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition - (HDZ965FBK4DGM / HDZ965FBGMBOX) but not the 955

Gaming is the primary use on it. Right now I'm playing Black ops and Bulletstorm. I also recently have been enjoying playing my old PS2 games on the PCSX2 emulator which from I read on their forums is very CPU dependent. I would simply play them on my old ps2 but it doesn't seem to reading discs anymore :normal:

Also I am using the bios from my ps2, so it's all legal. I know pirating is looked down on so I thought I would make that clear!
