Hi there, I want to replace my existing sata primary drive. I have two sata drives filling the IChr 5.

I have ghost14 and plan to do a drive copy.

Not sure where to place the new drive.. to start the format process etc.

Do I remove the second sata, place the new drive in, and copy, and then put the second sata back in place?

Do I need to update my bios before trying to install the new drive? I have most likely a 4 year old bios in place. Or just see if it recognizes the new drive.. and if not update the bios.

Installing a wdcaviar black 500gb

Thanks for any tips.. or if you can point me to a suitable guide.

Remove all drives that do not contain the OS (including any external drives, install the new drive, format the new drive, do the copy.

OK thanks...

So once I have the new drive in and formatted, I guess I have the choice to do a new windows install, or to copy the backup from ghost14 on my external drive to the new drive.

I guess I am not understanding the details of the difference between a new windows install and or installing the backup from my external drive using ghost14.

If I do a new install, do I follow all the same procedures as when I first built the machine, xp, then intel chipset install software, then etc... ie do I need to reinstall fresh all the drivers, or will they be loaded when I copy the backup from ghost14? I don't really want to find and install all the programs fresh.

Thank you.. as you can probably imagine.. spending most of the day trying to find out information on this.

Copying the backup will simply put things back to how they were when you created the backup.

A fresh install means you will have to reinstall everything manually.
