help needed... multiple problems with computer...

1812 Views 21 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Deckard
Hi,

Am writing out my problem in detail. Hope you guys can help.

I had the virusburster malaware infection on my computer two weeks back and i had got rid of it by using smitfraud and roguescanfix. I also had my folder options menu item missing from the the tools toolbar option and since my antivirus McAfee was not detecting anything I scouted around the web for a solution and I spotted this somewhere.

->Run -> Type gpedit.msc
Then:
->User Configuration ->Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Explorer-> Removes the Folder Options menu item from the Tools menu.
Right click:
-> Properties -> Disable ->Apply

I tried this and the folder options came back. But then after I restarted my computer it disappeared again and even doing the above wasnt getting it back.

Also, my homepage cannot be changed any longer. Its set to http://vaio-online.sony.com/ and it cant be set to anything else. I change it in the internet options and apply the settings but it comes back to the same page.

My computer performance has also diminished considerably since the last week. Am posting the Hijacklog now. Please advise.

*bump*

Another thing I forgot to mention last time was that whenever I click on a search result from Google. It directs me to some strange pages. I then go back and this happens twice or thrice after which when I click on the desired link I go to the correct page.

Putting down some of the strange pages for your aid...

http://oldhetaira.com/suddenly i see lyrics.cfm?nft=1&t=4&p=4
http://rpicamps.com/education system in india.cfm?nft=1&t=4&p=4
http://weddingcamerasplace.com/radio blog.cfm?nft=1&t=4&p=4
http://wordsea.com/.cfm?nft=1&t=4&p=4

And the strange thing is that all the above pages look pretty much similar...

Waiting earnestly for your advice...

Download CleanX-II
Please download CleanX-II and save it to your Desktop.
  1. Disconnect/unplug the computer from the Internet.
  2. Save any work which you're doing & close all other programs.
  3. Double-click CleanX-II.exe
  4. The tool will begin scanning your machine. Because this worm names it's files randomly, there are a series of cross-checks/verification processes to ensure that the tool does not remove legitimate files. Depending on the size of your drives, this scan may take several minutes. Please be patient during this period & allow it to complete it's task.
  5. Once it has finished scanning, it will provide a log file, which will be saved to your Desktop with the name CleanX-II.txt.
Please post that log and a new HijackThis log.

The folder options is not there and I am still unable to change my webpage.

Thanks.
See less See more
I realize this is a long list of things to do, but we need to nail both of your infections and see what else is on your system. It should get easier after this.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes. Please do these steps in order and do not skip any.

Unhide Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside "Hide file extensions for known file types". Click OK.

Download CleanUp!
Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

WARNING: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any temporary folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

WARNING: Do not run cleanup under Windows XP x64 Edition. If you're not sure if you have the 64-bit version of Windows then you probably do not; however, you can check by using IE to download the whichcpu tool and then running it.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware
Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware.
  1. Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Shield tab at the top
    • Click on the word active to change it to inactive.
  2. Click the Update tab at the top:
    • Under Manual update, click Start update. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful". If you are having trouble updating, you can also download and run the manual updater.
    • Under Automatic update, change the Update interval to something more reasonable like 12 or 24 hours.
  3. Click the Scanner tab at the top and then the Settings sub-tab:
    • Under How to act?, click Recommended actions and select Quarantine.
    • Under Reports, select Automatically generate report after every scan
  4. Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not run a scan with it yet.

Download FixWareout
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites and save it to your Desktop:
  1. http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
  2. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Now double-click on Fixwareout.exe to run it.
  • Click Next, then Install. Make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin. Please follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load. This is normal.
Once the desktop loads, a text file will open (report.txt). You can close it -- the file has already been saved. However, please include the contents of that report with your next post.

Reboot
Reboot your system to Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears and choosing Safe Mode from the list. On some systems, this may be the F5 key so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on with your usual account. Make sure to close any open windows.

Sometimes you must force an update with your group policies.

Try the following:

  • Go to start->run->gpedit.msc
  • User Configuration->Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer
  • Double click Removes the Folder Options menu item from the Tools menu, which is on the right side
  • Select Not configured, then click OK
  • Exit out of the group policy editor.
  • Go to start->run->cmd
  • Type gpupdate in the command prompt and press enter
Hi,

The Kapersky Scan did not run on my comp and gave the following message...

"Some components are damaged or not present. Please reinstall the application". I think it has something to do with the fact that i access the net through a proxy. I had to update the AVG Anti-Spyware manually as well.

Hmm, some entries are still in your HJT log. Let's try fixing them again; if they refuse to go away, we'll send in the big guns.

Unhide Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside "Hide file extensions for known file types". Click OK.

Reboot
Reboot your system to Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears and choosing Safe Mode from the list. On some systems, this may be the F5 key so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on with your usual account. Make sure to close any open windows.

HijackThis Fixes
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they still exist (make sure you do not miss any):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bron-Spizaetus] "C:\WINDOWS\ShellNew\bronstab.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tok-Cirrhatus] "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe"
O16 - DPF: {0EB0E74A-2A76-4AB3-A7FB-9BD8C29F7F75} (CKAVWebScan Object) - http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...an_unicode.cab
Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Deletions
Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ShellNew\bronstab.exe

Reboot
Reboot your system to Normal Mode.

Online Scan
Please perform an BitDefender Online Scan using Internet Explorer. Once finished, click on the Details button to view the results. To the upper right of the results you will see an option saying "Click here to export the scan results". Please do so and save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the results of the scan with your next post.

With Your Next Post...
Please paste the following with your next reply (in this order please):
  1. BitDefender scan report,
  2. a new HiJackThis log taken after BitDefender finishes.
Did you by any chance save your Panda ActiveScan report? If so, could you post that for me also? Thanks.

Hi,

I m again unable to change my webpage... its got set back to http://vaio-online.sony.com/ and isn't changing...
:sigh:
Download KillBox
Download KillBox v2.0.0.175 (it's important that you get version 2.0.0.175).

Launch KillBox.exe and select the following options:
  • Delete on Reboot
  • All files (if available)
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl-C:
C:\WINDOWS\ShellNew\bronstab.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdbcy.exe
In KillBox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard. Click on the dropdown menu next to Full Path of File to Delete field. Verify that the filenames you pasted are found there.

Select/tick the following:
  • Delete on Reboot
  • End Explorer Shell While Killing File
Click the RED X button. Click Yes at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click NO at the Pending Operations prompt. Do not allow KillBox to reboot.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run KillBox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try KillBox again.

HijackThis Fixes
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they still exist (make sure you do not miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bron-Spizaetus] "C:\WINDOWS\ShellNew\bronstab.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tok-Cirrhatus] "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe"
Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Post a new HijackThis log for me when you have done this.

Hi,

Sorry but i am having a problem in understanding the instructions as well as running the program...

I ve downloaded and installed it... There is no 'All Files' options there, is that okay? Also, it is getting copied to the clipboard but is not getting pasted to the Full Path of File to Delete field. I can at most put one file at a time. Should i do that? Reboot thrice with three individual file names?

Also this instruction of yours is not clear

Click the RED X button. Click Yes at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click NO at the Pending Operations prompt. Do not allow KillBox to reboot.

Do u want me to NOT allow killbox to reboot? How will it delete the files then? Or am i missing something here? You want me to run the HJTscan without rebooting the comp and allowing killbox to remove the files?

Apologies if the questions are dripping of noobie-ness...:4-dontkno

No, no, I gave you confusing directions and I apologize. You should reboot after you paste those filenames into Killbox. My instructions usually have more steps and I forgot to edit that bit.

Copy and paste this list instead: Killbox doesn't like spaces before the filenames. Again, my fault and I apologize:

C:\WINDOWS\ShellNew\bronstab.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdbcy.exe

Finally, it's okay if you don't have the "All Files" option.
Hi,

I am unable to paste all the files so I decided to delete them one by one... But theres again some problem... It asks me if I want to reboot after I put in the file names and click the Red X i get a msg that says

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by External Process

It says this for all the three filenames.

and then the machine doesnt reboot... I rebooted it manually after that but I don't think anything happened...

Pasting the HJT log for ur reference...
