Help! My screen is tiny! (RESOLVED)

20692 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  cadfox
OK, I have a Dell Latitude laptop and my friend recently rebuilt it for me and installed windows XP - everything is great EXCEPT that everything on my computer is TINY now! I mean I have to get like 5 inches away from my screen to even read this writing. Also, certain web pages dont show up as full screen, they show up really small too. I have messed with all the display options to no avail. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Change the Resolution Settings........RightClick Desktop > Properties > Settings Tab and reduce the resolutionss...
I've tried that, when I lower the resolution it makes the desktop appear even SMALLER with a huge black border around the screen - it shrinks it into a tiny box into the middle of a black screen
Make sure that uve installed the graphics driver and in the same Screen Resolution area, there is a button for Advance...Click on it and reduce the DPI settings!

That's the resolution that your notebook runs at. It sounds like you may need glasses.

You could try making the resolution lower. It sounds like you set it higher.
Um, i have glasses on now - I'm only 30 - it's not lack of sight my friend. And I'm quite familiar with computers, this is not a problem I have ever seen before. Everything is really mini - and only certain websites show up as the very small screen, others just show up with the tiny writing. And i have tried all the different options on the resolution optin under preferences - thats the same as going through display - it is not changing anything by doing it that way. But thanks anyway - anyone else have any ideas?

No need to be snappy.

I'm telling you what it is, its the resolution. Why don't you tell us what its set at?
I was not trying to be snappy, just joking, guess it didn't come off the way i meant it. All I'm saying is I tried it at 1600 x 1200, 800 x 600, and everything in between. When I have it on the higher setting the screen is normal size and only the writing is small. The lower I move it the screen gets smaller and the writing gets bigger. But not all the writing - it's really hard to explain. The writing on my screen now is really small, like 6pts, but the blue bar saying what web page I'm on is big. When I signed onto my AOL account the header was big but my writing was tiny, even when I changed the font size. Its really weird.
Is it just with your internet Browser or with the whole computer???
Go to your Device manager and see if there any red or yellow exclamation marks
Start/Right click on My computer/Properties/hardware/ device manager
Thanks everyone for your help - problem solved :)

It was affecting the whole computer not just the internet but I brought it to the IT guy at my office today and he fixed it by hitting F4 at the startup and changing it from there. Thanks again to all who replied to help - much appreciated :)

Can you please explain this coz I really dont know wat exactly is that he did and I want to learn it....Thanks!
I just wanted to add to this thread, because I had the same problem and eventually found a solution.

I booted up my Latitude C840 today and the screen was half size (i.e. a tiny square in the middle). Changing resolution, area or any other display settings had effect, but it still displayed as if on about a 7-inch monitor.

The fix is Fn-F7. This key combination toggles between the whole monitor and a tiny one. I'm not sure what it is there for but that is all it was. After an hour of checking display drivers, settings, etc and hunting on the www it finally was just that easy.

Just wanted to add this here, in case anyone else googles to this thread. thx.
-thanks for the Fn-F7 tip, it resolved this issue for me, as well.
