I am new to this so please forgive me. I have Windows XP - Windows 7 Viena, Service Pack 3 2008-2009. I have no idea what all of that means, but I know that all my info is gone and all of my homework. It says Cannot find local profile and is logging me on to a temp profile and all changes will be lost. I had to re-do my research paper and then I had to shut down and restart the computer since after hybernation I could not log onto my school site. When it came back on, again as a temporary profile, my 7 hours of work was gone again. PLEASE HELP!!! How do I get all of my work back.

Well, if you saved your work when using a temporary profile, and you saved in "My documents" or similar. I think it may be gone...

BUT your ordinary profile, where hopefully a lot of your stuff is, may still contain all your previous work. It's unlikely the whole profile folder is corrupted... Look in C:\Documents and Settings and see if your username is there. If it is, open that folder, then look for "Documents" and you'll hopefully find your stuff. If you do, the first thing to do is to back it up to a USB-stick or similar. You'll also find a "Desktop" folder there if you happen to have anything saved on the desktop.

As for the corrupt profile, after you've recovered all your important data, you may try to rename the "USERNAME" folder inside Docs and Settings. This should make it unavailable to Windows and hopefully it will create a new one. It won't have your personal settings, but you've already gotten your important data so it's no big deal right?

EDIT: You're making these short, concise, answers to spite me, aren't you!
