(first post) The 5step method didnt work for me. too many errors. My computer has been acting VERY slow, random (annoying) music has been playing on my desktop and i can not turn it off, and my task manager has been "disabled by administrator" but my account is the only one on this computer and im supposed to be administrator. this has been happening since i downloaded a file (the one time i dont scan a file before opening it, right?) and opened it. OH! my mcafee JUST detected a worm on my computer as im typing this. OK! my screen just went red, 3 IE windows opened, and i just got a whole bunch of windows security alerts. all this just happened after i clicked to remove the worm with mcafee... kinda hard to kill all these pop ups. i have in the lower right corner instead of the clock, it says "VIRUS ALERT!" well, i need to get off and sleep. but it would be nice to get a reply on this here sitiation. ill check this tomorrow maybe. any help appreciated, please.

Hello Zynk, Welcome to TSF!

I know that you mentioned that you have already tried "The 5 Steps"; however, if we are to attempt to assist you with your problem you will need to persevere with them and try and post a log in the HJT Help Support Forum.

You mentioned "errors"...what are they?

Please re-read the instructions in this article..."Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? - First Steps"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good Luck with it.

Kind Regards,

no problem, i dont care how long it takes, just as long as i get all this crap and (retarded) music off my computer. thank you! OH! and i just remembered, this morning i checked this computer and the control panel, run shortcut, my computer, programs (all except 'connect to') shortcuts have "mysteriously" disappaered from my start menu.
These irregularities could also be associated with malware/virus attacks.
Try the instructions in my Post #2.

Good Luck with it!

Kind Regards,
UPDATE!

i got some spyware/malware off of my computer, but im having issues still, when i open "my computer" i cannot see my C: or D: drives. Also, my clock still has "VIRUS ALERT" next to the time (and that is a bit annoying still). my computer is running moderately slow still and there are a couple of things missing from my start menu that i can not seem to retrive (such as the log off icon next to the shut down button.). not even Mcafee can see my hard drive when i go to scan my whole computer. there are most likely other problems, but so far i have not expierienced or spotted them yet. I know my computer does not normally run this slow. should i just wipe my disk? (via HP recovery) i dont really have any secure information that i "cant afford to lose" so wiping really looks like the best route (to me.) but i REALLY dont want to go through the pains of re-installing everything i have put on this computer. feedback?
Please follow the instructions in Post #2 above.
Do you have the recovery/restore disk set for this computer?
i HAD it set way back when, but i stopped it a long it because i didnt expect THIS to happen...but yea, too late for me to restore now, no restore dates go back before the virus.
You have been instructed 3 times to follow the "The 5 Steps".
The security team can help you with your issue. We cannot assist you with this issue here in the Microsoft Support Forum.

If you want to format the system you will need your media as ThorXP mentioned. If you do not have any recovery media you can always purchase this depending on what your system is. If you want to get it cleaned up then read the following.

Please read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112/if-you-think-your-computer-is-infected-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you’ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.
